PRAISE FOR BRUNO'S FAULTLESS ACCENT AND STRONG SINGING VOICE
I've just come across a great Flashdance review from when the show visited Eastbourne in November
Bruno, in particular, gets a good review, with reviewer Amanda Wilkins commenting in the Sussex Express that he was the surprise of the evening. She adds: "This performance is a world away from his best-known role of Todd Grimshaw in Coronation Street. He has a strong singing voice and his American accent could not be faulted."
The tour is currently in residence at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall for 2 weeks and is continuing to receive great reviews. One review, from the Eastwood & Kimberley Advertiser, describes the show as being "energetic, fast-paced and feisty", and says that Bruno "excels" in the role of Jimmy Kaminsky.
I'm looking forward to seeing the show in Nottingham myself on Saturday - it'll be interesting to see how it has evolved since I last saw the show in Manchester in September!
There's a great interview with Bruno in todays Nottingham Evening Post, where he talks about his career so far and the many diverse roles he's played, such as Todd in Corrie, Adam in Doctor Who and his current role as Jimmy in Flashdance.
Talking about his groundbreaking role as Todd, he says: "The first two-and-a-half years I was there, he was a straight character. Part of the reason people thought it worked was that he didn't come in as an outrageous gay character. You saw him internally change and externally. It was fun to do it and a lot of people identified with it. I got some great letters. They made me want to carry on and do the storyline to the best of my ability."
Bruno says that the Corrie fans and Doctor Who fans are very different types, but he describes the Doctor Who fans as "weird and wonderful".
Starring in Doctor Who gave him the chance to work with the Tenth Doctor Christopher Eccleston, and they later worked together again when they both starred in the play Night Sky at the Old Vic theatre in London. Bruno says that he would love to work with him for a third time: "I've not seen him in a while. He's a great actor so he's always in demand but hopefully we'll meet again in the future and work together again."
And, as for the future, he is contracted to Flashdance until June, but who knows what will happen afterwards. Whatever it is though, he says that, whatever he does, he always tries to make it different from the last thing he did: "It's not as if I'm an A-lister who gets scripts sent all the time. I'm not at that point in my career, although hopefully I will be."
An extended Flashdance trailer has been uploaded to You Tube.
This new trailer features soundbites from the creative team and more clips from the show, including a great little clip of Bruno singing his big song 'You Can't Keep Me Down'.
Click here to watch it (Bruno singing his song starts at 3.34).
Flashdance choreographer Arlene Phillips has praised Bruno in a new interview.
Speaking to Nottingham's Evening Post, Arlene praises Bruno for making the role of Jimmy his own. She says: "Bruno has made the part of Jimmy, I can really say that. It's a character who starts full of energy and hope, but it becomes very desperate. He without question makes this role."
During the run of Flashdance in Cardiff back in November, Bruno was interviewed on radio show 'Carry On Friday', which is part of the schedule on Welsh radio station GTFM.
This fantastic and very funny interview sees Bruno discussing his previous roles in Coronation Street and Doctor Who, and also his current (non-dancing ) role as Jimmy in Flashdance. Talking about the non dancing, he says that he "moves with style" instead! He also talks about his "sweet and sour" son, revealing that Freddie is following in his dad's footsteps already and has recently filmed his first TV commercial! He also reveals that he is looking towards doing a big TV series after Flashdance has finished and that he wants his agent to sort something out for him!
You can listen to this great interview in two parts on You Tube. Click here for part 1 (the interview starts at about 4.35 minutes in) and click here for part 2.
Flashdance has been playing to sell out audiences and rave reviews in Oxford this month, with the Henley Standard saying that the only way to describe it is "what a feeling", the lead song from the show!
The newspaper compliments the show on its superb cast, saying that Bruno "proved there is life after a soap", but is particularly enthralled by the choreography, describing it as the star of the show.
I just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year - hope you all have a brilliant time tomorrow, whatever you're doing and wherever you're doing it, and here's hoping for a fantastic Bruno-filled 2009! Fingers crossed that all your dreams, hopes and wishes come true for the next year
I'd also like to thank you all for your continued support of the website - without you, it wouldn't exist, so I really really do appreciate all your support, and it really means a lot to me.
I hope you will continue to support me with the website next year as Bruno continues on with the Flashdance tour!
Thanks a lot for everything, have a great Christmas
Bruno, Flashdance co star Victoria Hamilton-Barritt, and Flashdance choreographer Arlene Phillips have been speaking to The Oxford Times ahead of the show's 3 week run in Oxford from Monday.
In this interview, Bruno admits that it's a blessing he doesn't have to dance in the show because, er, he can't! He also discusses putting on an American accent for the show and how much fun it is to play a character like Jimmy. He says: "It’s a great role — characters who are a bit weird or crazy are always more fun to play."
He also references his old Coronation Street character Todd Grimshaw, who was originally going to attend university in Oxford!
Unfortunately Flashdance lost to West Side Story in the Best Musical category at the M.E.N Theatre Awards on Monday.
But the M.E.N newspaper has given Flashdance a nice write-up, saying that it "was a terrific attempt to re-create the hit film on stage with fine performances and terrific choreography from Arlene Phillips".
