Oh Romeo, Romeo, Tickets Are Selling Fast
Tickets for this year's Shakespeare Under The Stars Festival are selling out at record rates. Romeo and Juliet will be staged in the open air at Stafford Castle from the end of this month, with audiences of up to 800 people a night expected.
Organisers say 70 per cent of the tickets for the 17-day run have sold already. The previous best-selling production was Macbeth in 2003, and the latest show is proving just as popular.
So far, the schools matinee on Monday, July 4 has totally sold out, and just 70 seats are available on Saturday, July 2, 60 on Saturday, July 9, and 54 on Saturday, July 16.
Justine Watkins, spokesman for Stafford's Gatehouse Theatre, which is selling the tickets, said: "Some nights there are literally just a handful of tickets left.
"Rehearsals began on June 6 and work has already begun on constructing the set at the castle. Everyone is geared up for the big opening."
The starring roles in this year's production have been taken by Bruno Langley and Scarlett Johnson - former stars of rival soaps Coronation Street and EastEnders.
The production sees the return of a more traditional interpretation of Shakespeare following last year's production of the Comedy Of Errors, set in a 1940s seaside town.
Stephen Freeman, producer and casting director of the festival, said: "After last year's Dad's Army-type World War II town, we decided to take a more traditional approach to the Bard, and all the costume designs and stage concepts depict elements from the Italian Renaissance period.
"Audience members can expect long flowing gowns for Juliet and the archetypal balcony for the infamous scene."
Tickets for Romeo and Juliet, running from Thursday, June 30 to Saturday, July 16, at Stafford Castle, are available from Stafford Gatehouse box office on 01785 254653.
Ticket prices vary from £14.50 on weekdays to £18.50 for premium seats on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Special tickets for £12.50 are available for the first night and Saturday matinee. Concessionary tickets are available for £12.
