Things getting a bit flash for Corrie's Todd

Former Coronation Street actor Bruno Langley is set to star in Flashdance The Musical alongside Brookside's Bernie Nolan and Hear'Say's Noel Sullivan.

A straight actor cast in the role of a young gay man, millions of viewers tuned in to find out the fate his Coronation Street character Todd Grimshaw, who found himself torn between his love for his pregnant girlfriend and for another man. The on-screen kiss that caused such a stir remains one of the most memorable moments in soap history.

The 25-year-old actor, whose recent credits include Romeo in Romeo And Juliet at Stafford Castle, The League Of Gentlemen's Apocalypse and Dr Who, says: "It's amazing that we've moved on so much in the four or five years since. Nowadays when a soap character outs themselves, no-one really cares any more. People just accept it.

"At the time I got myself deep into the character. When you are a soap actor it's relentless, so by the end of the day you can feel quite drained. But it was great working with Tina O'Brien (Todd's girlfriend), and she made the job a lot easier."

Based on the hugely-popular 1980s film Flashdance, Flashdance – The Musical centres on Alex. A welder by day and an exotic dancer by night, she dreams of becoming a professional dancer.

"My character, Jimmy, grew up with her and went to school with her," explains Bruno. Both are striving for their dreams, but that leads Jimmy to a very bad place, as he's a drug addict, and Alex to a very good place."

Of the show's appeal, he says: "Theatre, musicals, and films all allow us to sit down in the dark and absorb ourselves in something that takes us away from everyday life.

"Everyone is coming to see the show – children, adults, wives, husbands – and they seem to be having a good time.

"Will they see me dancing?" he adds. "If I was dancing, I wouldn't have passed the audition. I've not got two left feet, no – I've got three."

Flashdance The Musical can be seen at The Regent Theatre in Hanley from Monday, November 24, to Saturday, November 29. Call 0870 060 6649.
