Bruno's Role
Flashdance is a well-loved film from 1984, which has now been turned into a brand new stage musical that has been touring throughout the UK from June 2008, and will continue to do so until May 2009.
Set in Pittsburgh, USA, it tells the story of 18 year old Alex, who is a welder by day and ‘flashdancer’ by night. Although she enjoys her day job, it’s her dream to be accepted at the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy and to take up dancing in a more professional capacity.
Although the story still very much revolves around the character of Alex, bringing such an iconic film to the stage has given the writers and producers the opportunity to create and explore new and different characters as well.
Bruno plays the part of Jimmy Kaminsky, a character who didn’t feature in the original film at all, but has been written especially for the stage musical.
Described by Bruno as a "singing crack-addict", Jimmy has just come out of prison and is looking for someone to give him a break and to get his life back on track.
Being an old friend of Alex’s, he’s hoping that she might be able to help him out. When she turns his back on him, however, he finds himself living a life of crime once more, in order to fund his drug habit, which is spiralling more and more out of control.
This particular storyline arc soon comes to a head and ends in disastrous consequences, not only for Jimmy himself, but also for Alex's mother, Hannah.
Flashdance is Bruno's professional musical theatre debut. Although he has often sung in the past at charity events, he has never performed in this way professionally before. With the role of Jimmy, he’s able to show off his singing skills to a wider audience, especially during the powerful 'You Can't Keep Me Down', where he sings lead and really comes into his own. This is probably one of the most powerful scenes in the entire show as Bruno sings with real emotion and depth.
Bruno has impressed and surprised fans and critics alike with his portrayal of Jimmy and his great singing voice, and this certainly holds him in good stead should he wish to do any more musicals in the future.
