Flashdance The Musical Review 18
Flashdance the Musical - Bradford
Reviewed By: Nick Ahad
Ubiquitous BBC film critic Mark Kermode has a stock catchphrase: "Everyone involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves".
He uses it when a film's standard is remorselessly awful, but I intend to employ it for a different reason.
Namely, when a stage of one of the county's leading theatres is turned into what is to all intents and purposes an "exotic dancing club" with women dancing in their underwear, then everyone involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
Especially so when a large proportion of the audience is made up of youngsters in their teens and even younger.
Flashdance The Musical is a stage adaptation of the much celebrated Eighties movie about a young girl who works as a welder by day and dances out her dreams on stage at night.
The much applauded movie – Oscar winning, no less – had lots of heart and an energy that made it impossible to resist (it also carried a 15 rating in this country).
The stage version lacks much of this, having been turned into a production by numbers.
The stage version largely follows the same plot as the movie. Alex is a welder and dances with three of her friends in a sleazy club at night. While the men might be there to look at her shapely curves, showed off amply by an absence of much clothing, Alex's love of dance is pure.
A subplot which remains from the movie is the love affair between Alex and the nephew of the owner of the steel mill where she works by day – their beautifully choreographed courtship is one of the highlights of the show.
An extra subplot from the movie and one which feels shoe-horned in, deals with local bad boy Jimmy, who kills Alex's mother in a bungled robbery.
These two subplots produce the best and most convincing performances of the show with Noel Sullivan, formerly of Hear'say, playing Nick Hurley the nephew and Bruno Langley playing Jimmy. Both are convincing actors and impressive singers. The other highpoint is in the rendition of Gloria by Alex's three friends, chiefly thanks to Ruthie Stephens as Gloria.
Overall though, there should be red faces all round. **
