Flashdance The Musical Review 30
Flashdance the Musical - Bristol
Reviewed By: The Mature Times Team
Based on the 1983 film and set in Pittsburgh USA, Flashdance tells the story of 18 year old Alex, a welder by day and dancer by night, and her dream to be accepted for a place at the Shipley Dance Academy.
The plot here, to be honest, is fairly minimal – but throughout it is told with sensitivity and passion by the cast, lead by Victoria Hamilton-Barritt as Alex – who is just wonderful in the role, with strong but essentially very likeable characterization. Her singing and dancing is as excellent as her acting – the only ( minor ) point being that we didn't see enough of the dancing, until the end of the show, when her finale routine was technically excellent and only wanted a small degree more passion to be perfect.
The supporting cast were very strong indeed, with well observed and beautifully sung performances, particularly from Bernie Nolan as Alex's Mother, Noel Sullivan as Nick Hurley, Bruno Langley as Jimmy Kaminsky and Ruthie Stephens' touching performance as the tough but vulnerable Gloria.
Arlene Phillips' choreography was, as you would expect, fresh, exciting and sexy and worked well to reinforce the action and emotion of the show – particularly during Alex's deeply moving ‘nightmare' sequence. The show features several iconic 80s hits from the film, such as "Maniac", "Gloria", “I Love Rock & Roll” and the Academy Award winning title track "Flashdance - What a Feeling" but is much more than another 80s tribute show; also featured are 10 original songs created for the musical, which are rather good –if a little lacking in variation of tempo – more ‘light and shade' would have been good. The industrial set is very effective and, together with the lighting creates a suitably bleak urbanity.
This is a relatively new show - only premiering last July - but judging by the delighted reaction of last night's audience, it looks like it's set to run and run. Catch Flashdance at the Bristol Hippodrome until 11th April.
