Flashdance The Musical Review 33
Flashdance the Musical - Rhyll
Reviewed By: Roni Skye
Opening night of Flashdance at Rhyl Pavilion Theatre and the whole crowd is buzzing with excitement.
I suddenly feel I should have got into the spirit and wore some legwarmers!
Full of pulsating raw energy and breathtaking choreography by Arlene Phillips (Strictly Come Dancing, Grease, Starlight Express).
Flashdance tells the story of 18-year-old Alex, a welder by day and 'flashdancer' by night, whose dream is to obtain a place at the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy.
The performance starts with a number of figures on stage, with welder masks on.
One by one they remove their masks, and as the main star of the show removes her's the applause is deafening.
The show is filled with incredible dances, voices and rhythm.
And I am amazed by how well the whole cast can sing.
Victoria Hamilton-Barritt plays the main character Alex, and she has a great voice and is a great dancer.
Although I was a bit disappointed to not see more of one of the most famous dance scenes, with Alex on the chair when she is splashed with water.
But hey we are seeing this performance live so ill let her off!
Noel Sullivan (ex Hear'Say) plays Alex' boss and love interest Nick and now I realise why Noel was chosen for the final band.
His voice is incredibly powerful.
As is Bruno Langley's (who played Todd in Coronation Street), I didn't even know he could sing, but he really can.
And of course Bernie Nolan, who after seeing her a few times on stage always amazes me with her voice.
The musical features all the well known tracks from the film including Maniac, along with Manhunt, Gloria, Love Rock & Roll and the Academy Award winning title track Flashdance - What a Feeling, as well as 12 original songs created for the musical.
An incredible performance by all- which was given a standing ovation at the Rhyl Pavilion.
