I was really excited to be going to see Bruno in A Taste Of Honey. Admittedly, I was a bit unsure about it at first- with Bruno playing another gay character just 19 months after his critically acclaimed turn as Todd Grimshaw in Coronation Street, I thought that it was perhaps a bit too soon; it worried me that he might be typecast, especially as I had read certain similarities between Geoffrey in A Taste Of Honey and Todd in Corrie. However, the announcement came before I had watched the film, or even read the book. Once I had done both, my opinion completely changed! I really enjoyed the film and the play and, to be honest, I thought that Bruno would be mad to turn it down!! A Taste Of Honey was such an important play of its time and was brave in its tackling of subjects which were still a taboo, such as homosexuality and teenage pregnancy. I just knew that it would be good for Bruno's career and I was in no doubt that he would do justice to the role of Geoffrey. (As I read the play, I could actually hear Bruno saying Geoffrey's lines in my head!) Bruno has also more than proved his versatility as an actor over the past few months, showing that he is more than capable of portraying all kinds of different characters and making them convincing and believeable.

I'd booked for April 22nd and, as April fast approached, I was looking forward to it more and more. I was also feeling a slight regret, however, that I hadn't booked for another performance. I'd only ever been to one performance of his other plays and I'd often mope around afterwards, wishing that I'd had the sense to book for an extra performance! So I couldn't believe it when I was invited along to the press night on April 21st. This would fit in with my plans perfectly as, due to problems finding a cheap train ticket up to Manchester on the 22nd, it was looking more and more likely that we would have to spend an extra night there by going up on the 21st instead. It couldn't have been planned more perfectly and so, it was with a mixture of excitement and anxiety that I woke up in the early hours of Friday morning, ready to go up to Manchester for the press night.

We had a long journey ahead of us and could "look forward" to a coach from Colchester to London Victoria, bus from London Victoria to London Euston, train from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly, tram from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Victoria, train from Manchester Victoria to Oldham Mumps, and taxi from Oldham Mumps to our hotel- phew! We'd be travelling from 7.40am to 3pm, although the journey wasn't too bad, just very very tiring. It wasn't without its mishaps either- my mum nearly ended up at Kings Cross when she didn't get off the bus in time at Euston! Hehehe, that was very funny!

Anyway, after we got checked in at the hotel, we had a bit of a rest and watched Deal Or No Deal and Neighbours, before it was time to get ready. I decided to go for "smart casual" and wear my black dress with my cardigan over the top. We'd been told to arrive at the theatre at around 7.15pm so we could find Tom from the Coliseum and pick up our tickets.

When we arrived at the theatre, there were some paparazzi stood outside waiting. We walked straight past them and I got majorly majorly excited when I saw my first glimpse of Bruno in character as Geoffrey on a poster outside the theatre. Of course, I had to take a photo! I thought Bruno looked rather cute in his geeky glasses and a million miles away from his previous character of Todd!

Once inside the theatre, we found Tom straightaway and, after introductions were made, we were given our tickets (on the envelope, it said my name and "Bruno Website" hehehe!) and a programme. Tom also explained to us that we were to go over to the press area during the interval, where we could have more of a chat, and that, after the play, we were to go into the stalls bar and he would take us to meet Bruno. Tom mentioned how I've met Bruno before and I said yes, I've met him twice. For some reason though, I still felt a bit nervous about meeting him! I can be quite shy at times, although I've never had any problem talking to Bruno, so I knew I would be okay.

After collecting our tickets, we went and had a drink in the stalls bar, before we were allowed to go into the auditorium and take our seats. We were in row I so had a really good view of the stage. I was pleased to see that the auditorium was completely packed out. The play was due to start at 8pm but, 15 minutes later, and it still hadn't started! We realised why though when Dora Bryan, Helen from the original A Taste Of Honey film, was led in to her seat. A few minutes after she got settled in, the play began.

A Taste Of Honey tells the story of Jo and the volatile relationship she has with her mother, Helen. Set in Salford, Manchester, Jo finds herself pregnant and alone after sleeping with her sailor boyfriend Jimmy and after Helen leaves her to get married to her boyfriend Peter. Jo then befriends Geoffrey, a gay art student, who essentially becomes the "mother of the house", looking after Jo throughout her pregnancy. Their idyll is shattered, however, when Helen returns home.

The set up on stage is quite simple, with just one set of a working class flat in Salford being used. A variety of 1960s music is also used throughout the play, to great effect!

Geoffrey doesn't appear in the play until the second half, but I enjoyed the first half immensely, even without Bruno in it! Samantha Robinson was immediately impressive as Jo- I thought that she really captured the essence of the character and should definitely become a big star in the future. I felt that she really captivated the audience- you know someone's good when you can't take your eyes off them whilst they're on stage! It did take me a little while though to get over the fact that she actually sounded like Claire Peacock from Corrie! Samantha was amazing though and her portrayal made you really care about the character.

Samantha Giles, as Helen, must have found it difficult and nerve-wracking to be performing with Dora Bryan in the audience, although this didn't show in her portrayal. She was very good and perhaps had most of the comedic lines to say, which were delivered with ease. I did, however, feel that she perhaps looked slightly too glamorous to play Helen, and I also felt that she was sometimes over the top and could do with toning down her performance slightly. These are only very minor criticisms though as she still gave a convincing and believeable performance.

Andonis Anthony was also highly impressive as Helen's unlikeable partner Peter, although he portrayed the character with a certain amount of charm too, so you could fully appreciate why Helen was so attracted to him. He also had some funny lines to say, which were delivered well and got the laughs from the audience. Although I think we were perhaps laughing more AT Peter than with him!

Although Chris Jack didn't have as much stage time as everyone else, he still more than made his mark as Jo's boyfriend, and their blossoming relationship was rather sweet to watch.

The first half lasted about an hour and, although it was enjoyable and very good, I did feel that it dragged on a bit at times, and could perhaps do with editing slightly. There were times when the pace was a bit too slow.

Once the first half had finished, we made our way over to the press bit. Free drinks were on offer but I declined this as I can never eat or drink when I'm feeling nervous...and the thought of meeting Bruno later on was still playing on my mind! We saw Dora Bryan sat in the corner, and my mum really really wanted her autograph and so Tom led us over to her, and we asked her to sign the front of our programme, which she was more than happy to do. I gave her my very special pen to sign it with- it's one of those fluffy pink feathery pens that lights up when you write! She got a bit of shock when it started to light up....so much so that she temporarily forgot what she was going to write! She seemed rather taken with my pen hehehe! She was really nice although every bit as scatty as you would imagine her to be! After this, Tom was asking me about my website and so I was explaining how I started it up after Bruno left Corrie as I wanted to follow his career. We were also talking about how Bruno hadn't made an appearance in the play yet, but I was very much looking forward to his dancing, which I had heard a lot about!

It was soon time to take our seats inside the auditorium again. I was getting really really excited about seeing Bruno, as I knew that he was in the play right from the start of the second half. As the lights dimmed and more 1960s style music started up, Bruno, as Geoffrey, came laughing down the stairs of the flat on stage, pushing Jo in a pram. Bruno looked so different in his glasses- really geeky! But I thought they suited him as well. When Bruno started to speak. I noticed that he was using a perfect Salford/Manchester accent, which was exactly the same as how the rest of the cast were speaking. I also noticed how he was camping it up as Geoffrey- not so much in the voice, but more in his mannerisms. It was quite funny seeing Bruno acting like that, but he pulled it off superbly.

Bruno's portrayal of Geoffrey was fantastic, and a complete joy to watch. He made me smile each time he appeared on stage and yet again showed a natural flair for comedy. He delivered his comedic lines perfectly and received big laughs from the audience. I think Bruno was absolutely perfect for the part of Geoffrey, and really endeared himself to the audience, creating a lot of empathy and sympathy towards the character. I think it is Geoffrey who I cared about most. Like the rest of the cast, Bruno totally captured the essence of his character and, like with Samantha Robinson, I found myself unable to take my eyes off him whilst he was on stage.

However, we all have our flaws, although I was beginning to think that Bruno doesn't have any! Until now, that is. Yes- the dancing!!! I was quite surprised at how long Bruno was required to dance on stage for, and on two separate occasions as well. The first time, he was required to dance to Cliff Richard's Move It whilst tidying up the flat. He had to dance with a number of props, including a feather duster and a mop, and also threw in a number of bum wiggles too! It was absolutely hysterical and Bruno looked to be having the time of his life on stage. The second time, he was required to dance with Samantha Robinson to When by The Kalin Twins. This was also a lot of fun to watch, but especially when Bruno stopped dancing and started to ride around the stage on a very small bike! It looked quite difficult to ride, especially as Bruno has got quite big feet (ahem!), and there was one hairy moment when he wobbled a bit, but he got through it with no problems thankfully. I also liked the bit in the dance when he did a somersault onto the sofa! Bruno's no dancer- he looked a bit stiff during the routines, especially when dancing with Samantha- but he was still absolutely brilliant during these scenes and seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage. Watching him and Samantha dancing together on stage reminded me of when I used to have sleepovers with my mates when I was about 15 and we used to put the music on at full volume and just dance around the house together, having the time of our lives! I also thought it was sweet how Bruno was singing along to the songs and also, at times, counting the beats in order to get the rhythm and choreography right!

Oh, and some of you may be interested to know that Bruno gets his trousers off during one scene! ;)

Bruno really was fantastic as Geoffrey and I have to say that this could actually be my favourite ever role he has played so far! I just enjoyed his performance so very very much and I really want to go and see it again now!

The audience were very loud and very appreciative and enthusiastic of the play and the cast as they came to take their bows at the end. None more so than Dora Bryan though! After the cast took their bows, Andonis Anthony walked to the front of the stage and explained how Dora was in the audience- he asked her to stand up and take a bow, which she did to more rapturous applause.

After this, we decided to go and sit in the stalls bar, which is where most people were headed. We ended up sitting with the director's wife, and on the next table to Dora. I could hear Dora being highly enthusiastic about the play, saying how she couldn't fault it or any of the performances at all. I think she really enjoyed it! After a short while, Dora went backstage to meet the cast and have photos taken with them. A couple of minutes after this, Samantha Giles and Samantha Robinson came into the bar and collected a bottle of champagne and some glasses, and then headed backstage again.

Dora came back after a while and sat back down in the bar, and then various members of the cast and crew were milling about as well....no Bruno though! Tom then came to tell us that he'd told Bruno we were there and that Bruno would be about ten minutes....YIKES!! I know it's silly to get so nervous but I always panic about saying the wrong thing or getting all tongue tied and having everything come out wrong! I'm always fine in the end though because Bruno is so nice and really easy to talk to.

Ten minutes soon came and went....eleven minutes....twelve....fifteen...twenty....by now it was 11.45pm and there was still no sign of Bruno!! I was beginning to think that he'd somehow managed to escape out of the back door after hearing I was there hahaha!

Tom then came back and said that he was going to go and see where Bruno was and what he was up to. He was only gone a few seconds- when he returned, he beckoned myself and my mum over and said that Bruno was having a good old chat backstage, and Bruno had said that we could go and meet him there! So Tom took us backstage to meet him- I spotted Bruno straightaway; he was leaning against the wall and kind of looking out for us. When we approached him, he first shook my hand and then my mum's. He asked what we thought of the play and I said that it was fantastic and he was brilliant. My mum commented that she loved the dancing and Bruno kind of rolled his eyes and looked a bit embarrassed about it hehehe! He then asked how the website is going and I said that it's going really well. He then wanted to know how many hits the website has had so far. "How are we doing then?" is how he actually phrased it! Bruno's comment about "we" made it sound like an official website rather than a fan site and so that kind of threw me a bit and my mind sort of went blank. I said that I wasn't actually sure how many hits we've had, and Bruno commented how I must have a counter on there or something. I said that I do but I don't really know how many hits we've had off the top of my head. Bruno seemed genuinely interested in the site and in the answer to his question, and he commented that he would have to check it out. He then went on to ask "what's happening then, what are you up to?" and both myself and my mum were really unsure what to say so my mum just ended up saying, "er....I don't know!" My mind just went blank again and I felt really embarrassed- I thought Bruno must think we're really thick or something! I did find my voice though and told him how we're going to see the play again tomorrow with a couple of friends, and I explained how far these friends were coming from to see him and he was like, "oh cool". He then added that it would be good to see it again as there might be some differences with the show...oo-er! Tom then wanted to take a photo of myself and Bruno on his camera. He invited my mum to be in the photo too, but she wouldn't....spoilsport!! Admittedly, I was secretly pleased that it was just me and Bruno in the photo though....sorry mum!

As Bruno put his arm around me and pulled me close towards him, I accidentally stepped on his foot, oops! I was wearing these new heels and when Bruno pulled me towards him, I lost my balance a bit and, well.....sorry Bruno, I didn't mean to step on your foot! I did apologise though, and he just smiled, so I don't think he was annoyed!

As Tom took the photo, Bruno stuck his thumb up in front of us, so I'm really interested to see what that one looks like! Tom also took an extra photo just in case one didn't turn out and, in this one, Bruno leant his head against mine hehehe!

I think I thanked Bruno after this, and then Tom said that he's got my e-mail address so he'd e-mail me the photos of me and Bruno. He also said that they'd taken some official press photos of the play the other day and he'd e-mail them to me as well so I could put them on the site. Bruno seemed quite pleased about this and said, "yeah, e-mail them to her for the site, that would be great". Tom also commented how I've got some stuff about A Taste Of Honey on there already and have a banner to advertise it.

My mum then asked Bruno whether he'd mind signing the programme as she may auction it for charity (my mum works for a special needs nursery, and I think she may have explained this to Bruno as well, although I'm not sure). Bruno said, "no problem" and began to sign with my fluffy pink pen! He made a rather bemused face when he saw it light up hehehe! Whilst signing, he asked me how the play compared to London...I was a bit confused at first but then I realised that he meant London as in Life Imitates Art which I had seen the previous month. I was really shocked that he'd known I was there and realised who I was! Although I'd met him there, he hadn't given any inclination that he knew who I was or anything. But my mum thinks he must have realised as soon as he'd read my birthday card for him. Anyway, after getting over the initial shock, I said that I really enjoyed both but you can't really compare the two because they are so different. Bruno agreed with this, saying how he knows that there are a lot of differences.

He'd finished signing the programme by now, and so we thanked him and said our goodbyes. Bruno said that if we were around in the bar later, then he'd join us for a drink but, if not, then he'd probably see us tomorrow. He thanked us for coming and we thanked him again, and then we left him and his friend to carry on their conversation!

Unfortunately, we couldn't stay to have that drink with Bruno as it was already gone midnight and we needed to order a taxi to get back to the hotel. We asked one of the staff for a local taxi number we could phone, and then went out into the foyer as, for some annoying reason, you can't actually get a signal from inside the bar! After ordering our taxi, we headed back through the bar and out of the back door, as taxi's usually wait by the back of the theatre in Oldham. We passed Bruno in the bar on the way but didn't really speak to him because he looked preoccupied speaking to someone else.

Whilst we were stood outside waiting for our taxi, Andonis Anthony came out, waving his mobile phone around. He commented how he can't get a signal, and I said that I couldn't get a signal in the bar either. He asked me if I was on Vodafone too and I said yes. Then one of the theatre staff came out and asked us if we'd ordered a taxi as there was one waiting out the front for us...apparently the driver couldn't get round the back for some reason! So then we had to walk back through the bar, passing Bruno on the way again. This time he saw us leave and so we said goodbye to him and see you tomorrow.

So, it was back to the hotel for us after a very exciting but tiring day! I sent quite a lot of texts and made a couple of phone calls when we got back, but then it was off to sleep, with dreams of Bruno...

The next day we had arranged to meet Angie and Alex outside The Lowry Centre in Manchester at 11am. We had quite a lot to fit in before going off to the play in the evening and so it looked to be another exciting but tiring day!

We arrived at The Lowry shortly after 11, and met up with Angie and Alex straightaway. I've met Angie twice before and so it was lovely to meet her again. I'd never met Alex before though, so it was especially lovely to meet him, and he was really really nice, like I thought he would be!

We had a drink and a bit of a catch up chat, and I told them all about the previous evening. It was great reliving it all again and it made me even more excited about going back to see the play (and Bruno) later on! After a while, we decided to go upstairs to look around the gallery. I began to feel a bit unwell with a thumping headache at this point and so myself and my mum decided it would be best to go back to the hotel so I could have a bit of a lie down, as I didn't want it to get any worse- I needed to be ready for the evening! I was upset at having to leave Angie and Alex, but I knew it would be for the best. On the way out of the Lowry, I spotted a card in the shop with a painting of Salford town centre on the front so I decided to buy this for Bruno as it would be rather topical.

We got the tram back to Manchester Victoria and headed back to the hotel in Oldham. I just needed to lie down and have a bit of a rest as I felt fine by the time the evening started to approach. After watching Deal Or No Deal (sorry- I'm addicted!), I just had time to write my card to Bruno- where I said good luck for the rest of the tour, how much I enjoyed the play and thought he and the rest of the cast were fantastic, and how I especially loved the dancing. I also thanked him for taking the time to speak to myself and my mum. It was then off to meet Angie and Alex in the foyer of our hotel so we could get a taxi to the theatre together.

When we arrived, I took another photo of the poster outside the theatre, and we also had our photos taken with the poster too....well, you just have to, don't you?!

I was pleased to see that the theatre was also packed out for this performance although the audience were less enthusiastic and a lot quieter this time around. They still enjoyed the play but just weren't as vocal as before! Bruno and the rest of the cast, once again, were fantastic, and gave another faultless performance. I felt really sorry for Samantha Robinson though during one scene where she has to get changed for bed and she got her head stuck in her shirt and took ages to get it off. She was only having trouble with it for about 30 seconds but it was the longest 30 seconds ever. She was very professional about it though and it didn't put her off her performance at all.

Andonis Anthony came to the front of the stage at the end of the play again, this time to say that they'll be in Oldham for the next three weeks and that the theatre is already booking for the next show, Midden, if anyone wants to get tickets for that. He then added that the stalls bar is now open and that he and the rest of the cast would see us there for a drink hehehe!

So we headed straight off to the bar to relax and unwind and compare notes on the play. A few minutes after we arrived, so did Bruno, along with Chris Jack, Andonis Anthony, Samantha Robinson, and her boyfriend. Samantha sat down at the table next to us, whilst the others stood at the bar getting the drinks in. I think Bruno must have forgotten something because he then dashed off. He came back a couple of minutes later though and sat down with his drink (looked like a coke if anyone's interested!) and started to chat to Samantha's boyfriend.

At this point, I wasn't really sure what to do as Bruno hadn't acknowledged us so far- both times when he entered the bar, he had walked straight past us without a second glance, although I did think that he may have seen us when he stood at the bar. I personally didn't mind if I didn't get to chat to Bruno again as I had spent a bit of time with him the previous evening. I knew that Angie and Alex had never met Bruno though, and so I really wanted them to meet him. I felt sure that they would regret it if they didn't get the chance. I wasn't sure, however, whether it would be okay to shout over to Bruno or not as he may not have felt like chatting. In the end, I decided that it would be best to leave the ball in his court, so to speak, and leave it up to him and see whether he acknowledged us or not. So, I carried on chatting to my mum, Angie and Alex, whilst trying to be all discreet by not looking at Bruno. As he was only sat at the next table though, I could still see him out of the corner of my eye.

A couple of minutes later, I noticed that Bruno had stopped talked to Samantha's boyfriend and seemed to be staring at me, like he was trying to catch my eye. So I decided to risk it and turned to look in his direction. As soon as I looked at him, he smiled and gave me a little wave, and so I waved back. He then said, "hi, how are you?" So I said that I'm fine thanks, and then he asked me whether I enjoyed the performance and whether I thought that it was a better performance than the previous night. I said that I thought it was fantastic and, yeah, I would say that it was a better performance than Friday. Bruno said that he thought it was a better performance for him too. He then asked whether I'd noticed any differences with the performance, and I commented how I'd noticed him doing wheelies on the bike, which he hadn't done previously! And Bruno smiled and said yeah, whilst Andonis chipped in and said that Bruno was getting all daring now! I commented that I thought he was going to go flying off the edge of the stage and Bruno and Andonis both laughed.

Myself and Alex both had good luck cards for Bruno and so my mum passed them over to him, and explained what they were. Bruno was like, "awww, are they for me?" And Andonis thought it was sweet. Bruno thanked us and then, to our mortification, opened the cards and read them right there and then in front of us, agh!!!! After he'd finished reading my card, he caught my eye and winked at me, also smiling and giving me the thumbs up.

Alex then plucked up the courage to actually go over to Bruno and speak to him and get his programmes signed (I'm SO pleased that Alex got to meet him at last!).

Whilst Alex was enjoying an audience with Mr Langley, we decided to get our programmes signed by Bruno and the rest of the cast, seeing as they were all there, with the exception of Samantha Giles. As my mum was wanting to auction the other programme off, I had got another one for myself to keep, and so I passed it round the table for the cast to sign. It was funny when Samantha was signing it as she asked, "weren't you here last night?" So I admitted yes and then Chris Jack commented how I'm a "proper hardcore fan" lol! I explained how I'm going home tomorrow though.

After Samantha and Chris had signed my programme, Andonis somehow found himself without a pen (as I think Samantha and Chris were now signing other programme's) and so I passed him my infamous fluffy pink pen, which he admired greatly! But then commented how his daughters have pens like that! Agh! I was like, "oh don't say that, it's so embarrassing, I got it free from a magazine!" Andonis made me feel a lot better though when he told me not to worry as he has pens with Winnie the Pooh on hehehe! He asked me for my name so he could write it in the programme, and I told him. He then passed my programme to Bruno and asked him to sign it to Laura. So Bruno signed it, "To Laura Lots of Love Bruno Langley x" Bruno then bizarrely asked Andonis who the programme was for and so Andonis pointed at me and said, "Laura", which caused Bruno to roll his eyes and go, "oh yeah, Laura, of course", as if he couldn't believe that he'd forgotten who the programme was for....I couldn't believe it either, seeing as he had only just written my name a few seconds beforehand hehehe! I think Bruno was probably very tired though, bless him.

After we'd sorted out our programme's and everything, Angie asked whether she could take a photo of the cast together, and so they happily obliged. Bruno wasn't paying attention though as he had started to read mine and Alex's cards again, and so Andonis had to nudge him and say, "hey, it's you they really want a picture of" lol!

After this, we thanked them all and they carried on chatting and drinking, as did we! We decided to order a taxi for 11 (it was now 10.45) and so myself and my mum went out into the foyer to call for one. As we passed Bruno on the way, he asked where we going and so we told him that we were going to order a taxi and he went, "oh, okay".

When we came back, I noticed that Bruno was playing around with his mobile a lot and looking slightly confused. I wondered whether he was having problems getting a signal too and I was going to comment on it, but I decided not to in the end as I didn't want to interrupt! We ended up staying for another ten minutes or so before we had to leave to wait for our taxi round the back. As we got up to leave, I was going to say goodbye to Bruno but he was stood up and chatting to the cast (I think he might have been getting another round in), and so I didn't like to intrude. As we started to leave though, Bruno suddenly said, "are you going now?" and so we said yes, and he said goodbye, thanked us for coming, and wished us a safe journey home. The rest of the cast also said various goodbyes to us as well.

It was time for one last wave and goodbye before we found ourselves outside on a very cold street in Oldham, our Bruno weekend over...well, almost!

The next day we decided to go back into Manchester and take a look around Canal Street, where Bruno's infamous gay kiss in Corrie took place! We were so sad and took a picture of the club Spirit that Todd and Karl visited, and also had our pictures taken by the street sign, and also by the exact spot where Todd and Karl kissed....yes, I recognised it straightaway! It felt quite surreal being down there as it was a lot smaller than I imagined it to be- it looked bigger on TV!

It provided a really nice end to our weekend though. I had such a fantastic time, and special thanks to Bruno, Tom, Angie, Alex, and the rest of the cast of A Taste Of Honey for making it so special and memorable! It's certainly a weekend I shall remember for a long time to come.
