    Features - Top 10... - ... Future Roles

Since becoming a professional actor 9 years ago, Bruno has had a wide-ranging career which has seen him portraying a huge variety of roles - from a sexually confused teenager to a singing drug addict, via a boy scout and one of Shakespeare's most tragic characters, he's done it all. But what about the roles out there that Bruno has yet to play? This is my top ten list of roles I'd quite like to see Bruno play in the future.

    1. The Street - I've always wanted to see Bruno star in a really gritty drama, and you can't get much grittier than this award-winning series from the BBC! Created by Jimmy McGovern, the series follows the lives of various residents of one street in Manchester, and each episode usually features solely on the storyline of one particular character/family. Previous themes featured in the series include suicide, drugs, asylum seeker's, domestic abuse, cancer and murder. It's quite a grim and depressing series, as you can probably tell, but fantastically written and is a series which would give Bruno something to really get his teeth into and show off his fantastic acting ability to, I'm sure, great critical acclaim.

    2. Merlin - This is a fantasy drama airing on BBC1, which is based on the Arthurian legends of the mythical wizard Merlin, although it does divert significantly from the more traditional stories of the myth. We've never really seen Bruno appear within the fantasy genre before, although I think it's a genre he would suit really well. If Colin Morgan was ever to quit the show then I think Bruno would make a fantastic Merlin, although I think he would also make an equally good Prince Arthur too. In many ways, I think Prince Arthur is perhaps the best character of the two, although Merlin does have some great comedy lines to say, which would give Bruno the opportunity to do a bit more comedy. He has mostly performed dramatic roles but inbetween his tortured soul moments as Todd in Corrie and Geoffrey in A Taste Of Honey, there were some lighthearted moments too, which Bruno performed well and showed a natural flair for comedy. And, of course, who can forget his classic comedy faint in Doctor Who?! However, if Bruno was to ever star in Merlin, then I think it would be far more fun for him to play a dark/evil character. These sort of characters do tend to be quite panto in Merlin though, but seem to be a hell of a lot of fun to play as well! And Bruno does tend to play a lot of "nice" characters so it would be good for him to play another bad guy, after portraying Jimmy so well in Flashdance the Musical.

    3. BBC Costume Drama - I've always thought that Bruno would be brilliant starring in a costume drama on the BBC, such as an adaptation of a Charles Dickens or Jane Austen novel, or something similar. Not only would he look fantastic in the old-fashioned style clothes, but I also think this would provide him with the perfect opportunity to show off his "acting chops". These sort of drama's are also usually quite Shakespearean in style and Bruno was fantastic performing in a production of Romeo & Juliet in Stafford, so it would be interesting to see him doing something similar, although not exactly the same!

    4. Coronation Street - This is a bit of a difficult one for me because, as much as I love seeing Bruno in different shows and playing different characters, a part of me is still very attached to his character of Todd in Corrie, hence why this features so high in my list even though it's not a new role as such. I really enjoyed seeing Bruno reprise the role in autumn 2007, and it really felt like he had never been away as he managed to fit so seamlessly back into things. I was particularly impressed with how much Todd had evolved as a character, both within Bruno's acting and also the writing, despite the fact that he hadn't been back in 3 years. The viewers have a lot of affection for Todd so I think it would be good to see him back for a longer stint this time, and see more of him as a confident, happy and proud gay man. But, yes, this does conflict with my desire to see Bruno in more roles and my desire to see him back in Corrie as Todd...such a shame that we can't have the best of both worlds!!

    5. Torchwood - After his fantastic performance in Doctor Who, it would be great to see Bruno starring in this "adult" spin-off of the Sci-Fi show! With 3 members of the team now dead, they could certainly do with a couple of replacements, and who better than Bruno? Or if not a permanent member of the team, then maybe he could star in a one-off episode as a villain....personally though, I'd love to see him as a permanent member of the team!

    6. Action/Drama Film - Bruno has spoken about his ambitions to do more feature films one day, so of course this had to be in the top 10 list! I remember going to see The League Of Gentlemen's Apocalypse at the cinema and how fantastic it was to see Bruno making his big screen debut, even though it was only a small cameo role. It would be amazing to see him having a bigger role in a film though, and maybe one day taking on a leading film role too. I'd mostly like to see him star in an Oscar-worthy drama, but I also think an action movie would be pretty cool too - admittedly though, I'm not a particular fan of action films, although I can certainly see Bruno starring in one, and doing it well!

    7. Flashdance The Musical - It's been great seeing Bruno starring in a musical over the last year as I'd never really heard him sing "properly" before. I'd only really heard him sing on Stars In Their Eyes a few years ago but this was before I became a fan so unfortunately I didn't take much notice at the time! I knew he must be able to sing though as he has been a regular at many charity events where he has performed by singing and playing the piano. So seeing him performing in a musical was a wonderful and rare opportunity to hear him singing and seeing him add this as another string to his already very talented bow! Of course, this was also an opportunity to see him playing a bad guy for the first time, so that was really cool! With rumours that this is heading to the West End in the near future, it would be great to see Bruno reprise his role as Jimmy, although I would love to see them extend this role more as I feel the character is quite wasted at the moment and that there is so much scope to do even more with him!

    8. Doctor Who - After Bruno's character Adam was unceremoniously kicked out of the TARDIS, I've always felt that his storyline was never finished properly and that there should be a real desire to bring him back to finish off his story. After The Doctor left Adam back on Earth with a chip implant inside his head, which opens everytime someone clicks their fingers, I've always felt that it would be unrealistic for Adam to be able to go through the rest of his life without somebody clicking their fingers near him! The Doctor told him to stay unseen and unheard, but this would be a remarkable feat if he managed it! I've also quite liked the idea of Adam returning to get revenge on The Doctor for leaving him behind - this could create a fantastic storyline and really finish Adam's story off properly. This is probably unlikely now that Christopher Eccleston's Doctor has left, but I would have liked to have seen Bruno in an episode with David Tennant's Doctor, so it's a shame that David is leaving soon.

    9. West End Play - Bruno made his West End debut in 2005 when he performed in a play reading of a new play entitled Night Sky. He performed this play reading to critical acclaim, but I'd now love to see him go one stage further and actually tread the boards in a proper play in the West End! I think this would be great and a really credible thing for him to do. I remember Sir Ian McKellen once saying that film pays the most money and theatre the least, but film is the least credible and theatre the most - I think this is probably very true! Since leaving Corrie, Bruno has treaded the boards in a few theatre productions, to great success, and I feel that theatre is a genre which really suits Bruno and which he is really good at. I'd love to see him starring in something in the West End - maybe returning to the Old Vic, which is where the play reading of Night Sky took place.

    10. Desperate Housewives - If Bruno ever decided to go to America for work, then this is the first show I'd love to see him do! Set on the suburban street of Wisteria Lane, the series follows the lives of a group of women as seen through the eyes of their dead neighbour. They work through their everyday lives, whilst facing the secrets, crimes and mysteries hidden behind the doors of their "perfect" neighborhood. It's a wonderful critically-acclaimed comedy-drama, which is seen all over the world....maybe Bruno could play the part of another gardener who Gabrielle has an affair with!
